About the book
The first grouping in this book takes the form of a conversation between friends. The talk over the table reflects the poet's wide interests. The tone is open and robust -- sometimes wry or comic, sometimes sardonic, even grumpy.
Then the wine arrives and with the main course the mood changes. The talk becomes hushed, amused, warm and intimate.
Few New Zealanders have published so widely -- fiction and non-fiction, memoirs and criticism as well as poetry - and all to such acclaim.
